Swiss Alps Jungfrau‑Aletsch
The Swiss Alps Jungfrau‑Aletsch site was the first World Natural Heritage property in the Alps when it was inscribed by UNESCO in 2001. Stretching along the border between the cantons of Bern and Valais, it encompasses the largest glaciated area in western Eurasia and includes the famous 23 km long Aletsch Glacier.
The protected area covers about 82,388 hectares and is dominated by glaciers and high rock summits, which make up roughly 80 % of the site. Its remaining forests, alpine meadows and scrub support extraordinary biodiversity, with around 1,800 species of flowering plants and 700 species of mosses.
From Belalp you can enjoy spectacular views of this unique landscape. We encourage our guests to explore the marked trails, learn about glaciology and respect the fragile alpine environment.
