Belalp has long attracted scientists, mountaineers and lovers of the Alps. Among its most notable visitors was the Irish physicist and alpinist John Tyndall (1820–1893), whose pioneering research on glaciers, mountain climates and the behaviour of light helped shape modern science. He spent many summers on the Belalp, drawn by the nearby Aletsch Glacier and the region’s extraordinary alpine landscape.
In 1877 John and his wife Louisa Charlotte Hamilton built their summer residence, now known as Villa Tyndall, above Belalp. The couple returned year after year, developing a deep connection to the region and its people.
After John Tyndall’s death in 1893, caused by an accidental medication mix‑up, Louisa continued to visit Belalp for decades. In memory of her husband she later commissioned the Tyndall Monument overlooking the Aletsch Glacier, a place that had inspired so much of his scientific work. Hamilton Lodge takes its name from Louisa Hamilton, honouring her enduring connection to the Belalp and her devotion to preserving John Tyndall’s legacy.
